Should Fire doors have a gap at the bottom?

Gaps between fire doors and the door frame should never be more than 4mm or less than 2mm. It’s recommended to aim for a 3mm gap to ensure adequate room for the intumescent strips to activate in the event of a fire, and for the smoke seal strips (if installed) to not get damaged by the opening and closing of the door.

Should there be a gap between front door and frame?

How Much of a Gap Should There Be? There should be some space between the door and the frame for your door to open and close properly. The gap between the sides and top should be the same as the Nickel’s width (2mm) and 8mm between the door and floor.

Why is the gap on the bottom of my front door wider?

Often, you will see that the door on the hinge side is tighter against the frame at the bottom of the door. This is where most of the weight of the door is pushing against. When this happens the gap at the top will be uneven, wider at the strike side of the door.

How can I fix a gap in my front door?

Tighten the hinges. If the screws are loose in the casing, replace them with larger ones to create a tighter fit. If that doesn’t work, shim the hinge side. If the hinges are fine, you may need to take the door off and re-square it from scratch. Remove the trim and cut the nails holding the frame to the studs.

Is there a problem with my front door?

Yes, then the door is sagging. The sill is keeping it from sagging as much as it wants to. Sagging doors are the problem most of the time. The weight of the door pulls against the top hinge and over time the door will sag. This is especially true when the screws for the top hinge are not long enough to go into the door frame.

Where is the gap between the door frame and the jamb?

The first thing to do is look at the door from the inside when it is closed. There should be an even gap across the top and down the latch side. This gap occurs between the door and the frame or jamb. It should be about an eighth of an inch and be consistent.

Often, you will see that the door on the hinge side is tighter against the frame at the bottom of the door. This is where most of the weight of the door is pushing against. When this happens the gap at the top will be uneven, wider at the strike side of the door.

If tightening the hinges still doesn’t correct the gap around the top and sides of the front door, you can remove the screws and adjust the alignment. While you’re adjusting or shimming the hinges, replace the old screws with a slightly larger size to reinforce the hardware and prevent the door from shifting or sagging again.

What should I do if my front door is not working?

For the door above, try simply loosening the screws from the top hinge 1/4 turn or more. If this doesn’t work, try tightening the screws into the hinges at the bottom. If it’s still not fixed, you’ll need to try shimming the door hinge.

What should I do if my front door swings open?

If the door is already finished and decorated you will need to move the hinge and not the frame. If the door swings open on its own, unscrew the bottom hinge (and the middle hinge if it has one). Next, move the hinge out a little, away from the doorstop and screw it back on.
